January 20, 2006 What's worse than having your furnace break down in April?
When it breaks down in January, that's what. Bah. Thank goodness for a natural gas fireplace--instant heat on one floor. The furnace repair person is coming this afternoon. Hopefully it's a minor fix--when our furnace broke down in April it took ages to get fixed because we have a rare furnace and it's difficult to get parts. Today is going to be warm, so if it's a minor fix, we're ok. But if we need parts, we are screwed. Update: There are two broken parts. One we'll get later today. The other is an infamous "C part," meaning they need to order it in; we'll get later this weekend or early next week. So no heat this weekend. And of course it's going back down to freezing tomorrow, and it's supposed to snow. So we'll be housebound in a house without heat. Fanfuckingtastic. I'm really looking forward to this. But it does ease the guilt at taking Frances in to daycare on my compressed day, on Monday, so I can run some errands; I'm not going to want to be there in a freezing cold house, so why would she? If not, I hope that the warmer weather sticks around long for the parts to arrive. Posted by: ccw at January 20, 2006 9:09 AM
Yikes! I hope they get it up and running ASAP! I'm glad you have the fireplace, at least. Get a bunch of blanket and have a snuggle party! Posted by: Kim at January 20, 2006 11:15 AM

Happened to our neighbours a couple of weeks ago during the deep freeze. They used their fireplace (wood) and bought a few of those plug-in fan heaters from Canadian Tire...and shhhh....used them for 2 days and they returned them...but shhhh....you didn't hear it from me. We were without natural gas one night a few weeks ago. We had a space heater but it was still Not Fun. I'm so sorry. Posted by: Adria at January 20, 2006 7:02 PM
If it gets too cold, go to a hotel. Posted by: liz at January 20, 2006 8:25 PM
Thanks for the hints--we have the fireplace and as of yesterday, three space heaters--so we're going to try to tough it out. Should be interesting, though. Posted by: Andrea at January 21, 2006 7:47 AM
