September 12, 2006 Blogging Across Boundaries
So let's pretend that anyone but me is going to do this. (Can you tell I'm feeling a wee bit insecure? Hey, if you'd like to lessen that insecurity before Blogging Across Boundaries day, go read my latest letter at TheWholeMom and then participate. Work! You all have millions of things to say about work whenever some jackass tells you what you should be doing. Now a jackass is begging you to find a few words to dredge out of your mind on the topic when you're not steaming. Please?) ~~~~~ YOU'RE INVITED! To: Blogging Across Boundaries When: October 2, 2006 Where: Across the blogosphere Directions: First, pick a topic. It can be any topic at all, as long as it does not involve you personally and it is present in the region you currently live in. So: if you're a girl, no writing about feminism, and if you live in the US, no writing about post-apartheid issues in South Africa. Then, write about it. DON'T PANIC. It's ok if you have no idea what you're talking about. It's ok if you feel like you are destined to make a fool of yourself. You can write that: "OK, I'm writing about x only I have NO IDEA WHAT X IS! And it's very scary. But I think this is important. Thank you. The end." You don't have to do any research, you don't need to marshall any facts, you don't even need to argue a case for a new way of treating people, you simply need to stick your neck out for a few seconds and write: "Even though y issue does not personally affect me, I think it's important." Of course, if you want to do research, marshall facts, or present a case, you can do that too. RSVP: Here, in the comments or to andrea AT athenadreaming DOT org. This is so I can link to you on the day of. Also, you can steal this cute little button for your blog and/or indicate in a post sometime beforehand that you're going to do it, so that the 5,999,999,699 people who don't read Beanie Baby can find out about it, too.
I never claimed to be an artist. Why: Because. Because the internet should be a tool for bridging gaps as well as building communities. Because underneath our differences we're all human. Because it helps to see that other people are on our side, even though they stand to gain nothing from it. Hope to see you there. Also, do you want the permalink URL emailed to you that day? By the by, I like your button. :) Posted by: Kerri. at September 12, 2006 9:06 AM
I'm in - are we supposed to also let you know the topic ahead of time? If so... i'll get back to you on that : ) Thanks for organizing this! Posted by: epi at September 12, 2006 11:46 AM
Kerri, permalinks would be very helpful. Thanks. Epi, nope. Surprise me. :) Posted by: Andrea at September 12, 2006 12:53 PM
ok i'm in, i'll make an ass out myself discussing "the troubles" Posted by: Bridget at September 12, 2006 1:12 PM
can you give us a small example? Posted by: LauraJ at September 12, 2006 4:07 PM
I'm not totally sure I understand. You want me to blog on a topic that interests me, but which I haven't yet learned too much about? Or you want me to write about a blogger who writes on the topic which interests me, but which I know nothing about? Posted by: Jennifer at September 12, 2006 5:43 PM
By the way I'd rather do the second. It is not as easy to find good blogs on a particular topic as it would seem -- unless that topic is extremely broad, like "conservative politics." The other day I was trying to find some mommyblogs in other mountain towns and I didn't find even one! Posted by: Jennifer at September 12, 2006 5:45 PM
The button's pretty. I would almost like to participate, but I resist joining up and as far as choosing a topic, I am easily paralyzed with indecision. Posted by: ~Macarena~ at September 12, 2006 6:00 PM
JEn, well--what I had in mind was to blog about a topic, not a blogger. But if you'd rather do it the other way, it's totally up to you. The crux of it, for me, is that it's something that you aren't going to benefit from. I mean, whatever cause it is--isn't related to your own life. Does that make sense? So, being a somewhat slim person, you could write about sizeism; or being able-bodied, you could write about ableism. Laura, does that make it any clearer for you? Posted by: Andrea at September 12, 2006 7:05 PM
I will try, but! But! I have a hard time looking at any issue and not taking it personally. Sizeism, for example. I'm very thin, but I can still see ways that sizeism affects me. Same with racism and homophobia and ableism. So, I'm thinking I'm going to have to write about something very specific and very local. Does that still sound okay? Posted by: Casey at September 13, 2006 8:03 AM
That sounds fine. Posted by: Andrea at September 13, 2006 9:06 AM
Can it be a current news event? Posted by: LauraJ at September 13, 2006 9:19 AM
I'll do it. Do I copy the button or do you have it as HTML code? Posted by: ~Macarena~ at September 17, 2006 10:33 PM
Sorry--you'll have to copy it. Posted by: Andrea at September 18, 2006 7:52 AM
That's fine; thank you kindly Posted by: ~Macarena~ at September 18, 2006 2:16 PM

I'm way late to the party but will take up this challenge in the near future! Posted by: Kassie at October 2, 2006 7:18 PM
I'm late too - by coincidence, what I was writing about today involves why I apply everything I learn to myself and my experiences first. Posted by: Zazzy at October 3, 2006 5:10 PM
