(Back) to School

Do you know what I'm doing this morning?

I'm lining up to register Frances for junior kindergarten.

How is this possible?

(Hmm? What's that you say? Lining up? Yes. Apparently, in our municipality, you need to show up 30 minutes before registration starts in order to get a number so you can stand in line again to get your child into junior kindergarten in the public school in your neighbourhood. And here I thought this was something that those of us who couldn't afford private school wouldn't have to deal with. So I'm taking the morning off work to stand in the snow so I can ensure that Frances can attend public school.)

Go Andrea! Yay Frances!
On a serious note, it does seem odd about having to stand in line for public school registration. Of course, I know nothing about registering for school. I was greatly shocked last Friday to find out that registration for fall preschool is next month. Next month?! Too soon!

Wow. Things have changed. Of course, it's been twenty years since I signed our eldest up for JK, so change is not surprising. But lining up?? That seems really unfortunate on a cold January day. Surely there's a better way....

She's going to love it. Congratulations.

Our community Y offers winter swimming lessons. Our indoor soccer class had to be cancelled on the day of swimming registration because people FILL the gymnasium - for the chance to pay for their child to get into a cesspool and be sick until spring.

Yay for big-girl Frances! Sorry you had to endure the cattle-call that is registration (for just about anything these days...) but that's what good Mummies like you do. You'll GLADLY stand in the snow for your sweetie.

I can't wait to see the pictures of the very first day of school. (Wish Frances would be in my class....)

Oh no, really? I was just looking at information on registration the other day (although it's two years away for us, my little one's about to turn two and she's got a February birthday, so she won't start school until she's 4 and 1/2)...is this what we have to look forward to? I'm worried that it will be even more horrendous as I'm hoping to get her into an Early French Immersion program.

Good luck to Frances (and to you!), and let us know how it goes!

I'm struck by what a difference a couple of weeks can make. If I remember correctly, your due date with Frances was the same as mine for Simon (January 22). And because she was keen and early and he was stubborn and late, they will have a whole year of school in between them.

I can't believe you had to line up for public school. One more reason to be comfortable with the decision to go with the separate system, I guess. They pretty much guarantee a spot to all who are qualified, from what I understand.

I think the public school system here is just crowded.

But it was actually even worse than I anticipated, so check back tomorrow for the exciting conclusion.

Wow...unreal.

And I can't believe she'll be starting JK in the fall! I think Ontario has a December 31 age cut-off, while Quebec is the end of September? Can't remember. Either way...shocking to me.

WOW

My son is 5 and not yet in kindergarten, due to his birthdate. (He has to be five on the day kindergarten starts, so he won't go until fall 2007.) I'm surprised that there's a place for your daughter in a public school, isn't she just three? Canada rocks, despite the lines in the snow : )

That happens around here at the public schools, too. Ridiculous, isn't it? As my girlfriend said though, what are they going to do? Tell you your kid can't attend school? I don't get it...

I must tell you, this terrifies me. i can't believe we have to do this for public school. I was with a group of rather wealthy women today (way out of my scope) and they were all talking about wait lists for preschools...and their kids are 2..and i was filled with a deep dark fright.

Nadine, let me guess--did you hear the CBC report?

You know its' bad when a CBC reporter is on scene interviewing parents lining up for registration.
